The End (of Support) is Here
Posted on 7/16/2015 10:01:27 AM by Jared Simms

As you are hopefully aware, Microsoft's support has ended for Windows Server 2003, including Windows Server 2003 R2 and Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 on Tuesday, July 14th which means Microsoft will no longer be releasing patches, security updates, other fixes, or providing technical support for these operating systems that have been in use for over a decade and at one point ran the majority of the world's IT infrastructure.

Winxnet, security experts, and even the Department of Homeland Security recommend that all Windows 2003 Servers should already have been upgraded or replaced. Sometimes there are mission critical applications running on Server 2003 and a newer version support on Server 2008 or 2012 is not available or a clear migration path is not apparent. There may also be applications that are used infrequently or are of little value, but still required. Finally, many organizations may not have the technical resources to plan and implement these types of upgrades. These scenarios need to be carefully discussed between you and your IT partner, and a remediation plan put in place.

Adobe Zero Day and Third Party Software

Posted on 7/28/2015 10:55:27 AM by Dr. Eugene Slobodzian

This month, a new zero-day vulnerability in Adobe Flash Player was discovered via a cyberattack against the hackers-for-hire firm Hacking Team. A large amount of internal information that was leaked by the attackers contained data on the exploit, which could crash a computer and allow a remote attacker to then take control of the machine.

This is yet another bug discovered in Adobe software along with an extensive list of vulnerabilities. Unlike the rest of the security community, hackers know and exploit Zero-day vulnerabilites, which means that often no protective controls are in place and detection is difficult. When these vulnerabilities are discovered, they need to be patched as soon as possible since they are already being exploited by hackers.

Here are some ideas on how to help secure your networks:

  1. Disable/Remove. This is by far the best control to establish if you can afford it. Disability and removing this software will protect you from current and future vulnerabilities in offending software. Of course you need to make sure the users do not have the rights to install these components back on. This article by Symantec explains how to disable Flash plugins for browsers.
  2. Apply Patches Quickly. Recently, Microsoft has been doing a decent job of automatically applying patches to its components and 3rd party patching has become the next important part of your security updates policy. In cases where removal is not an option, make sure that these components are set to auto-update on the systems it is installed. Both Adobe and Oracle have software to monitor for updates. Also some IT management tools (e.g. Winxnet's tool of choice, N-able) have very useful facilities to cover specific 3rd party software in a centralized manner. This allows for controlled enterprise-wide patching with literally a single click.

Meet the Winxnet Beach to Beacon Team

Posted on 7/30/2015 8:34:46 AM by Suzanne Murphy

On Saturday, August 1st, thousands of runners from all over the country (and world) will compete in the Beach to Beacon Road Race. As a company, we pride ourselves on our community participation at all of our office locations, and as a Maine born and based company, we are very proud of the Beach to Beacon Race, and even more thrilled that it supports such great charities each year.

Since you might not often see them out from behind a computer screen, here's a look at the 2015 Winxnet Beach to Beacon Team:

Chris Claudio, Chief Executive Officer

As a co-founder of Winxnet (And the fearless leader of the Winxnet Beach to Beacon Team, Chris is very proud to be representing his company in this year's race. When asked about what he liked most about working at Winxnet, Chris said, "The people are some of the kindest, most talented and professional group I have had the pleasure of working with. I enjoy coming to work every day because of the caliber of my colleagues." At Winxnet, Chris is primarily responsible for the day to day operations of the sales and business development teams. He is a 'reformed IT guy', in his own words, and spent the beginning part of his career on the technical side. It's his experience working in the technical 'trenches' that, he says, gives him the passion and the drive to bring IT to businesses in a realistic way that allows them to truly achieve their business goals.

Chris is very excited for this year's race since it is such a fun and beneficial event. "It's such a high energy race and with so many people all along the route you are inspired with every step."
