Winxnet Acquires Information Security Firm, InfoSecurus

Acquisition of InfoSecurus further positions Winxnet as a leader in Security and Compliance and marks the beginning of a new phase of growth for the company

PORTLAND, Maine - April 22, 2014  --  Winxnet, an IT outsourcing and consulting firm that meets the complete technology needs of private and public sector organizations, today announced the acquisition of InfoSecurus, a leading Information Security firm. The acquisition broadens Winxnet's security offering and serves to complement Winxnet's existing Managed Security and Compliance solutions.

"Security and Compliance is a top priority for organizations of all sizes today," said Chris Claudio, CEO of Winxnet. "As the sophistication and frequency of cyber-attacks continue to increase, even organizations with exceptional in-house IT teams are now turning to experts for ongoing support. By bringing InfoSecurus' expertise into Winxnet, we further position ourselves to be the one resource organizations can turn to when they are looking for a partner with a proven track record for keeping information safe."

Plans for compliance are no longer good enough
Posted on 4/25/2014 8:54:32 AM by Jason Lenardson

For many of us that must comply with HIPAA, the required Risk Analysis was the wake-up call we needed to develop a Risk Management plan to ensure we were on a solid trajectory towards becoming fully compliant. Over the years, we have all leaned heavily on that Risk Management plan as a way to prove that we were headed in the right direction. Some of us even viewed it as a shield that would protect us from an audit by the Office of Civil Rights (OCR). "You can't fine me. I know what I am not doing and I have a list to prove that I am working on it!" Unfortunately, recent activity by the OCR is signaling that they are no longer accepting effort as an answer; they want results.

Earlier this month (April 2014) Concentra Health was fined $1.7M after reporting the theft of an unencrypted laptop to OCR. You can read about the fine in the press release on the Department of Health and Human Services website. The investigation found that in previous Risk Assessments, Concentra was made aware of the risks of not encrypting laptops and had a policy stating that they would encrypt these types of mobile devices.

Don't Blame SharePoint

Posted on 4/24/2014 10:40:10 AM by Amanda Downing

I hear it all the time - versions of the "SharePoint Sucks" story. This takes the form of one (or more) of the following comments:

  • I can't find anything
  • It's full of outdated stuff
  • I don't understand the structure
  • It can't do what I want it to
  • It's broken (or slow)

Whether these comments reflect reality or the end user perception of reality, most of the time the issue has nothing to do with SharePoint and everything to do with issues related to governance, planning and naming.

I know, I know, the G-word. No one wants to talk about it. Many see it as a buzz word and believe that regularly scheduled meetings resembling a SharePoint Board of Directors aren't worth the cost of the cross-functional resource involvement that it takes to get it right.

Small businesses -- more than larger corporations -- have long recognized the importance of doing more with less in order to maximize profitability in highly competitive markets. Improving operational efficiencies goes far beyond eliminating wasteful or unnecessary practices. It also includes gaining the right knowledge to adopt products, solutions and strategies that deliver the greatest business benefits.

This isn't always easy. To make the best choices, owners and administrators must navigate through a dizzying array of impressive technologies that may contribute little to no value to the bottom line. But this process is highly worthwhile. The SMB Group's Top 10 SMB Technology Trends for 2014 report notes that "progressive" businesses that invest in and view technology as a business enabler are more likely to achieve revenue growth than their more conservative peers [1].

Superintendent's Notebook: CEOs spend a day as
Portland principals
Published in The Forecaster, April 14th, 2014

Christopher Claudio will take off time from his job as chief executive officer of Winxnet, a Portland-based IT outsourcing and consulting firm, to spend a day as the "principal" of King Middle School.

Claudio is one of 17 leaders of local businesses and nonprofit groups who are participating in the Portland Public Schools' second annual Principal for a Day program during the week of April 28.

The CEOs will experience first-hand what happens during a typical school day. They will share with principals their insights about managing change in a complex institution, motivating employees to achieve their best and setting benchmarks to measure a company's success.

"The appeal for me is to find areas where I as a local business executive with a rapidly growing company can provide tools and resources to help my community," said Claudio. "I look forward to the opportunity to be a part of the solution in making our schools great."
