Ransomware: Steps to Help Prevent a Malicious Attack
Posted on 4/11/2017 9:09:26 AM by Dr. Eugene Slobodzian

Winxnet security specialists have recently noticed an alarming increase in the number of ransomware cases reported. Ransomware is a particularly harmful form of malicious software (malware) that is intended to compromise computer systems and is a top threat for many organizations.

Almost all security issues begin with human error, not computer malfunctions. Even though your organization can never be 100% secure, it is important to create enough controls and provide security training to make your organization more resilient.

While it is not possible to eliminate the risk entirely, there are controls you can put in place to reduce it:
  1. Backups. Just because you think your data is getting backed up, it does not mean it's true. Take some time to assure that backups send completion notices, and, most importantly, practice test restores periodically. If you don't test, you don't have backup.
  2. Education & Training. Periodic security awareness training is by far the most effective measure to put in place that will reduce your company's susceptibility to attack. Most compromises start with a click of a mouse so be sure you take the time to educate your organization about security.

Top Ways To Keep Your Email Secure
Posted on 4/6/2017 9:11:30 AM by Judi Grassi

Recently an article was published in Healthcare IT News stating that 68 percent of healthcare organizations have compromised email credentials. This study also stated that between 55 percent and 80 percent of organizations had compromised email accounts.

Why is this a concern? Verizon found that 63 percent of confirmed data breaches involved leveraging weak or stolen passwords. Verizon also stated that 93 percent of data breaches occurred within minutes and 83 percent weren't discovered for weeks.

I've listed the top ways to keep your email secure:

Steps to Prevent Spear Phishing Attacks
Posted on 4/26/2017 2:41:23 PM by Dr. Eugene Slobodzian

Over the past few weeks, Winxnet Security experts noticed a rise in spear phishing attacks. Phishing is a method hackers use to gain authorized access to company resources. The most common method of a phishing attack is email, but it can occur by phone or by person. Recently these attacks have been more sophisticated and don't have bad English, low quality graphics or obviously suspicious links. Sometimes these messages look identical to legitimate messages, making it more difficult to identify as a hack.

This increased effort and sophistication is a disturbing trend. However, there are always plenty of red flags that a well-trained and vigilant staff can spot. While this post can't replace the results a business would see from dedicated awareness training from a security professional, here are some of the common attributes of these social engineering messages to help you identify the signs of this type of attack:
