Cisco ASA End of Life

You know that as an IT company we feel strongly about security. Part of creating a culture of security is having the tools to do so. Like many tools in technology, hardware and software reaches "End of Support", which means there will be no more updates or patches for this particular software or product.

In September of 2014 Cisco announced that their ASA 5500 Series Software Release 8.4 would be reaching end of support on March 5th, 2016. This is the last date that Cisco Engineering may release any final software maintenance releases or bug fixes for Cisco ASA 5500 Series. After this date, Cisco Engineering will no longer develop, repair, maintain, or test the product software.

Winxnet and security experts around the globe are recommending that all ASA 5500s running Software versions 6.x to 8.x. migrate to the Cisco ASA 5500 Series Software Adaptive Security Appliance Release 9.1.

As your trusted IT advisor, we want to make sure that you are aware of the upcoming changes with this device and that actions must be taken to remain secure.

There will be many consequences if your company decides not to update:

  1. Security Risks & Vulnerabilities – After March 5th, Cisco Engineering will no longer develop, repair, maintain or test this software. There will no longer be software maintenance releases or bug fixes for Cisco ASA 5500. If you do not upgrade, security risks and vulnerabilities will no longer be patched or supported.
  1. Increased Downtime – A major implication of not upgrading will be increased downtime on your network since it may take your IT team or solution provider longer to trouble-shoot issues. Cisco Engineering will no longer be able to provide support or maintenance for these issues.
  1. Unresolved Issues – If your company does not take action and upgrade, the potential that issues will remain unresolved increases significantly. Cisco will no longer provide troubleshooting or resolution support which could therefore lead to an increase in unresolved issues. There is also a potential for additional costs due for intrusion detection systems, more advanced firewalls, and network segmentation.

Upgrading brings numerous benefits including increased security and better network performance.
